About the project

The Sacred Murals project represents an international effort to create a mural honoring the Buddha. A mural will grace all walls and the ceiling of the main chanting hall of an institute for Buddhist studies in Sarnath, India, which is where Buddha gave his first sermon. The six-month project is hosted by the Sarnath International Nyingma Institute. The institute’s primary mission is to help facilitate the study of classical Buddhist languages, including Sanskrit, Pali, and Tibetan, as well as to provide a unique forum for meaningful exchange between the East and West in the fields of art and science. Kaveri Singh and her husband TJ, both Los Angeles artists originally from India, are leading the Sacred Murals project. They are joined by dozens of apprentices and professional artists. Some have come from local universities, and others have traveled great distances--from both the East and the West--to participate in this historic project honoring an exemplary human life.
